Factory-tapered edges create a shallow recess designed to accommodate joint compound and reinforcing tape without producing an excessive ridge. Paper tape is centred over the seam and embedded into a continuous bedding coat, with excess compound removed while enough material remains beneath the tape for complete adhesion. Proper embedding prevents dry spots, bubbles and loose sections that can become visible after subsequent coats.
Fibreglass mesh is self-adhering and uses an open grid rather than a solid paper strip. Because the mesh itself is comparatively flexible, it is commonly paired with setting-type compound where that combination is appropriate rather than relying on ordinary drying compound for the initial coat. Material compatibility matters because tape and compound function together as the reinforcement system across the gypsum joint.
Inside corners require reinforcement along two intersecting planes while maintaining a clean change in direction. Creased paper tape can be folded along its centreline and embedded into compound on both adjoining surfaces. The corner is kept centred during application so one leg does not pull away or accumulate excessive material, which can leave an uneven intersection extending the full height of the wall.
Outside corners are vulnerable to impact and require a rigid profile rather than tape alone. Metal, vinyl or paper-faced corner bead can establish the edge depending on the selected system, with the bead aligned before compound is built outward onto both wall faces. A typical 90-degree corner must remain straight from floor to ceiling because even a small deviation becomes noticeable against baseboards, door casings and other straight finish elements.

The first compound application establishes the bond beneath reinforcing tape rather than the final surface profile. Compound is worked continuously into the joint before the tape is embedded, helping eliminate air pockets and unbonded sections. Leaving too little material underneath can produce blistering, while excessive compound creates unnecessary joint thickness that must be corrected during subsequent applications.
Each subsequent coat extends farther beyond the reinforced joint so the slight elevation created by tape and compound transitions gradually into the gypsum face. Instead of building thickness directly over the seam, finishing knives or boxes distribute material progressively outward. On a flat wall, this gradual feathering is what makes the joint visually disappear even though the reinforced area remains physically above portions of the original board surface.
Drying-type joint compound must release moisture before another coat is applied. Temperature, relative humidity, coat thickness and airflow all influence that process, making elapsed time alone an unreliable indicator of readiness. Kitchener's humid summer periods and closed-home winter conditions can create very different indoor drying environments, so compound should be fully dry before recoating to avoid trapping moisture or disturbing material underneath.
Sanding removes ridges, tool marks and minor surface imperfections after the compound has dried, but it should not be used to reshape a badly built joint. Where a vertical wall joint reaches an inside corner or ceiling intersection, several reinforced seams can converge within a small area. Applying full compound thickness to every joint simultaneously can create a noticeable hump. These intersections are finished in a controlled sequence, allowing each plane to be feathered independently while keeping the corner line straight and avoiding unnecessary material accumulation.
Openings interrupt otherwise continuous wall surfaces and often place joints close to casing lines, headers or corner details. Compound is feathered so these localized transitions remain flat enough for finish carpentry to sit correctly against the wall. Particular attention is paid to narrow areas between openings, where overlapping compound fields can quickly create excessive thickness across the entire strip of gypsum.
ASTM C475/C475M establishes specifications for joint compound, joint tape and related materials used in finishing gypsum panels. It addresses characteristics such as joint-compound performance and tape requirements rather than prescribing how attractive a completed wall should look. Gypsum-board and joint-treatment manufacturers commonly require minimum interior temperatures around 10°C (50°F) during finishing, with requirements varying by product and application. The substrate, compound and room should remain within the manufacturer's specified range through application and drying.
